Hiking, More Popular than Ever

With the way the economy is now, people are looking for ways to have fun without breaking the bank.  Hiking not only fits the bill, but it’s also great exercise .  A  Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association report showed that the number of people Camping went up 7.4 percent between 2007 and 2008.  It also revealed that Overnight Backpacking was up 18.5 percent.

That’s great news for the awareness of hiking. But it’s not all good news. Some local and state government bodies are in financial crisis and some of the park services are being  eliminated. These municipalities cut the “non-essentials” departments first and that includes parks. It can be a disappointing experience for those just discovering hiking, camping or other outdoor activities at these parks.

Because of the cuts, the parks can have less personnel, dirty restrooms and poorly maintained trails.

Hopefully, most of these people will look past the “bad” things.  Instead remembering the fresh air, exploration and adventure of their trip.
