Deaths at Vernal Fall in Yosemite

Yosemite National Park - Merced River - Vernal FallThree people are presumed dead after falling in the Merced river in Yosemite and being carried over Vernal Fall on Tuesday.  It is alleged that two of the three went beyond the protective railing slipped and fell into the river.  A third guest tried to save them and ended up going over the falls as well.

It is a sad day for the park.  This tragedy could have been avoided if people just followed the rules and stayed behind the protective barriers.  They are there for a reason.  Rivers may look to be safe and you think that there is no way that that current could take you, but the rocks can be extremely slippery and once you have lost your footing, it is hard to get it back in a strong current

This happened along the Mist trail that has about 1500 hikers a day.  The park rangers closed a portion of the trail from Tuesday to Wednesday.  They state that they will try and recover the bodies after the water levels of the river go down.  Because of  a cool spring and a large snow pack, the Merced river is unusually high for this time of year.

Our prayers go out to the families affected.
