Now that Spring is just around the corner, it is time to start taking precautions against insects while hiking.  One of many biting insects out there is the tick.  Ticks can harbor a couple of diseases that can turn you off to ever going out in the woods again.  But, never fear, there are precautions that you can take in order to reduce your tick risk!

Hiking is an adventurous outdoor activity which involves walking in dense forests and thick bushes. While hiking through dense vegetation you may often come across various pests and insects. One such pest is the infamous tick.

Ticks are blood-sucking parasites found in most wooded or forested areas throughout the world. Besides being a blood-sucking pest these can even transmit serious and sometimes fatal diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Most people do not notice when they are being bitten and the longer a tick is attached to your skin, the greater risk you run of contracting a tick-borne disease.

Here are some tips that will teach you how to avoid ticks when hiking.

  • Wear a hat, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt tucked into your pants. This will keep ticks outside your clothes. Avoid wearing fur clothes as they provide a perfect hiding place for ticks.
  • Wear light colored clothes so that ticks can be easily spotted.
  • Use an insect repellent with DEET (N, N- Diethly-Meta-Toulamide is an ingredient used in insect repellent) and apply DEET to your clothes and body but do not spray DEET on your hand and face. DEET has been shown to be effective for five hours and gives adequate protection against tick bites and other insect bites.
  • Apply peremethrin (A topical insecticide used to treat head lice and nits) into clothing, hiking boots, tents and camp chairs. Permethrin remains effective even after several washes.
  • Be vigilant and do a daily tick check. Carefully inspect your entire body when you turn in. Take extra care to check your scalp and underarms because ticks love to hide in these areas. If you have worn a fur jacket, then fur also provides a perfect hiding place for ticks.
  • Put your clothes in into a dryer and tumble them on high heat. Research has shown that most ticks die during a cycle in hot dry air of a clothes dryer.
  • Always walk on designated trails while on a hike and avoid going into dense vegetation and places where there are tall grass and bushes as these are the places where ticks are generally found.

Despite of taking all precautions if you are unfortunately bitten by a tick, carefully remove the tick with tweezers as quickly as possible. Be sure that the entire tick is removed. In case you are unsure whether the tick has been removed completely, seek medical help.

These are some great ideas.  To tell you the truth, I had not heard of Peremethrin, but I am going to get some before my next trip.  Putting your clothes in the dryer to kill the tick is another great solution.  Thank you Pauline for this insightful article.
